History

Founded in Perth, Western Australia, in 2012, Showrunner Productions became a new division of a publicly-listed marketing and advertising group. We bought together a group of passionate and experienced television professionals, who developed corporate video content and advertising, along with television programming. Our first television series' was the creation of the '72' format of which led to 72 Dangerous Animals Australia and 72 Dangerous Places to Live. Off the success of these programs in attracting global sales, we then followed up with 72 Cutest Animals.

We then took a break from the 72 series format and took up the production of Wimp2Warrior - a Sydney-based reality competition that trained a series of contestants to become Mixed Martial Arts warriors competing in the ultimate finale live at Luna Park in Sydney. Successful in pitching to a Discovery Australia initiative supported by Screenwest, we produced an 8-minute documentary for Shark Bites - our own regional homage to the world-renowned Shark Week. Mission Predator was filmed in Western Australia and featured a group of intrepid divers testing whether a panicked heartbeat attracted sharks.

In 2016, we were commissioned by Netflix to produce a further two series of 72 Dangerous Animals, as Netflix Originals. This time we focused on the regions of Latin America and Asia.

In March 2025, Showrunner Productions was acquired by former Managing Director David Morrison, with a vision to grow the business and develop and produce further series that informed, educated and entertained.

Management

David Morrison, Managing Director, has been involved with the Showrunner business since its inception in 2012. Prior to that, he founded a video production unit within his previous employer - focusing on corporate video production along with television series. The latter saw a relationship built with Western Australia's Community Television station - Access 31, where he was Executive Producer on live domestic cricket coverage and a sports panel show. He also hosted and produced an observational documentary focused on the WA Police's Air Support Unit.

A passionate storyteller and production executive, David's 30 year professional experience incorporates marketing, advertising, strategic planning, business development and senior leadership of large private and listed businesses.

With a hands-on approach to the business, David oversees all aspects of Showrunner, with a focus on program development, sales and financing. In recent years he has served as Executive Producer on all television series, including our Netflix Original Series.

David is also a passionate and active member of the community with experience in Directorships and Board roles across private and for-purpose organisations.

Team

We operate a small core team that focuses on program development and the handling of sales and program queries regarding our completed program catalogue.

When it comes to production, we manage most aspects of production in-house. We hire skilled professionals who share our passion and wherever possible, have an interest in the program's subject matter. Such roles include production coordinators, researchers, writers, producers, camera operators, graphics designers, animators, directors and editors.

We typically hire people for 'run of show' contracts and aim to hire people that are just starting out their career in TV production. We take pride in the fact that some people who started off with us in their first roles, now own their own companies or are working on major blockbuster movies.

When filming internationally, we usually hire local professionals who know their region and we then support them with providing filming, interview and design guidelines to ensure program consistency and continuity.
