Pioneering shark researchers design, build and trial the world's first subsea heart simulator

Program Information

A joint initiative between Discovery Networks Asia Pacific and Screenwest as part of their Shark Bites initiative, this 8-minute character-led special takes the Mission Predator team into uncharted territory where they must battle rugged conditions to conduct world-first trials that attempt to unlock the mystery of whether sharks can detect a panicking heartbeat.

They team up with biomedical engineers to learn how to get the organ beating, then head to
Western Australia’s beautiful but treacherous Abrolhos archipelago - a spot lined with ancient
shipwrecks and renowned for its bronze whaler and tiger shark populations. They meet rock lobster fishermen who tell tales of regular run-ins with tiger sharks and it’s also the spot where the team had a good mate die through an attack by a great white.

Why? Experiencing attacks first hand and losing a friend, these ocean-loving trailblazers are on a quest to make our waters safer. The aim of their research is to help scientists study shark behaviour in the wild like never before and gain new insight into how different species use their senses to target prey. They believe it could hold the key to predicting attack patterns, leading to the development of more effective, scientifically based deterrents, that will save lives.

Mission Predator will also deliver an important conservation message, showing how sharks are
critically important apex predators that keep the marine ecosystem balanced and our oceans healthy.
